Dubai World Superseries Finals 2017: PV Sindhu holds off He Bingjiao; reality check for Kidambi Srikanth

On a day of mixed fortunes for Indian contenders for the singles titles at the year-ending Dubai World Superseries Finals PV Sindhu just about managed to hold off a strong challenge from Chinese left-hander He Bingjiao while compatriot Kidambi Srikanth was mercilessly cut down to size by the reigning world champion from Denmark Viktor Axelsen. After an outstanding start to the opening game of her campaign in the 1 million prize money tournament Sindhu struggled to read the bewildering mix of slices half-smashes and full-blooded smashes doled out by her rival. But she managed to withstand the barrage and run out a 21-11 16-21 21-18 winner in an absorbing Group A contest that lasted four minutes over the hour mark.Srikanth made an equally bright start to his opening Group B joust against the towering 6 4 Axelsen but faded away in the face of a sustained counter-attack by the 23-year-old defending champion and caved in by a 13-21 17-21 scoreline in just 37 minutes much to the disappointm...

NASA's Juno finds surprise radiation on Jupiter

Washington Dec 12 (IANS) Jupiter s famous storm the Great Red Spot penetrates well below the clouds -- about 300 kilometres into the planet s atmosphere suggest data collected by NASA s Juno spacecraft. One of the most basic questions about Jupiter s Great Red Spot is: how deep are the roots said Scott Bolton Juno s principal investigator from the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. Juno data indicate that the solar system s most famous storm is almost one-and-a-half Earths wide and has roots that penetrate about 200 miles (300 kilometres) into the planet s atmosphere Bolton said. The findings based on data collected by the Juno spacecraft during its first pass over Jupiter s Great Red Spot in July 2017 were announced on Monday at the annual American Geophysical Union meeting in New Orleans. The science instrument responsible for this in-depth revelation was Juno s Microwave Radiometer (MWR). The Great Red Spot is a giant oval of crimson-coloured clouds in Jupiter s southern...

Gujarat Elections: Why there is so much more at stake for PM Modi this time

By Chaitanya Kalbag Those who make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities. - Voltaire Absurdity was piled atop absurdity as seven weeks of vitriol ended in a splash on Tuesday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking a seaplane ride. When this prime minister arguably the most powerful mass leader we have had in a generation breaks security rules his loyal ministers fall over themselves to promise a review. He sets the rules. Our politicians have plumbed new depths in slander and abuse. This is a bottomless pit: with social media amplifying every word and gesture we have heard enough about everything from imported mushrooms to Allauddin Khilji s offspring. Although Modi has only seven million fewer followers than Donald Trump s 44 million on Twitter he has to work much harder making speech after stump speech. He cannot take anything for granted least of all the seven million Gujaratis between 18 and 25 who were eligible to vote in the 2017 election - which is why hoppi...
