And so when the VAR completely took over the Club World Cup semi-final clash between Al Jazira and Real Madrid in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday evening people were left confused. Very confused. It all started in the 30th minute of the match at the Zayed Sports City Stadium when a header from Real midfielder Casemiro found the net via an Al Jazira defender. The goal was initially disallowed then it was given with Real even tweeting as much only to then delete it as it was disallowed again. It was eventually ruled out by the VAR as Karim Benzema was deemed to be offside. Al-Jazira then took a shock lead before half-time through Brazilian Romarinho and then incredibly broke on Real to make it 2-0 at the start of the second half through Mbark Boussoufa. To compound Al-Jazira s misery Real then fought their way back into the game as goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and substitute Gareth Bale secured a 2-1 win to take them into Saturday s final against Brazilian side Gremio. It comes as a major boost for Chelsea and their hopes of agreeing a new contract for Belgium No1 Courtois whose current deal expires in 18 months time. Manchester United keeper de Gea 27 has been Real Madrid s long term target but they have found it impossible to get him out of Old Trafford. However Real may still look for a long term No1 depending on Arrizabalaga s progress with the newly-capped Spain keeper set to move in January. Then it will be down to Real Madrid to decide whether they want another keeper but Arrizabalaga s arrival does take the immediate pressure off trying to launch a huge raid for either Courtois or de Gea. Real Madrid have failed with several bids for de Gea and United are desperate to keep him while Courtois may be easier to get if he does not re-sign. Paris Saint Germain are also watching developments on Courtois who was valued at more than 70m by Chelsea in 2015 to dissuade Real Madrid making a bid. Having finished second in their group behind Roma Antonio Conte s men were hoping for a potential tie against Besiktas but instead came out against Lionel Messi s band of superstars. Tottenham were also handed a questionable reward for finishing ahead of Real Madrid in their qualifying group as they were paired with last year s runners-up Juventus. The Spanish giants are ready to move in if Spurs once again fail to win silverware. Spurs have slipped way down the list of contenders for the Premier League title and are now reliant on the Champions League or FA Cup for major honours. And while goalkeeper Lloris is settled in London he is also fiercely ambitious. He will be 31 on Boxing Day and while that is relatively young for a keeper Lloris knows that his chances of winning one of the top prizes are now receding. Lloris could be tempted to leave Spurs at the end of the season (Image: Reuters) Zidane could be looking to bring in a new goalkeeper (Image: REX/Shutterstock) De Gea was previously thought to be Real s No.1 choice (Image: REX/Shutterstock) The Frenchman would cost around 25million and be a cheaper option than David de Gea.
